The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the ONE Campaign, and the Elliott family are now accepting entries for the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling, which recognises emerging African journalists who amplify community voices and highlight the transformational changes shaping the continent.
Eligible entries must showcase groundbreaking journalistic work published between December 1, 2024, and December 1, 2025. Submissions will be judged on the strength of the story, the quality of reporting, and the impact the work has had within communities. Entries across all media formats are welcome, particularly those that combine strong analytical insight with exceptional storytelling.
The contest is open to English-speaking journalists working anywhere in Africa across print, broadcast, and online media. Applicants must have no more than ten years of experience in journalism to ensure that the award supports emerging talents.
Each applicant is required to submit one published piece that captures the essence of Africa through thoughtful reporting and powerful storytelling. The judges are particularly interested in investigative or explanatory work that sheds light on meaningful, transformational change happening across the continent.
Entries must be submitted in English. If your work was originally produced in another language, an English translation should accompany the submission. Journalists from all formats are encouraged to apply, whether working in print, broadcast, or digital media. Multimedia submissions are also welcome, including audio, video, visual, web-based, or mixed-media storytelling.
Successful applicants will receive a $5,000 cash prize along with a personalised award certificate. The application form for the 2026 cycle is available here. Applications close on Sunday, January 9, 2026.
