National Bureau of Statistics Releases Data on Nollywood Movies Production

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released a report detailing data about the number of movies produced by Nigeria’s movie industry, popularly known as Nollywood, from Quarter 2 of 2017 to Quarter one of 2021. The report is titled Nollywood Movies Production Data (Q2 2017 – Q1 2021)

In the last three quarters of 2017, Nollywood produced 450 movies with 131 produced in the second quarter; 196 in the third quarter and 123 in the fourth quarter

In 2018, the number of movies produced rose to 565 with a total of 208 produced in the first quarter; 91 produced in the second quarter; 128 produced in the third quarter and 138 produced in the fourth and final quarter.

Again, the number of films produced rose in 2019 to 700 with 113 produced in the first quarter; 160 in the second quarter; 173 in the third quarter and 254 in the fourth quarter.

The year 2020 saw a massive rise in the number of movies produced which more than doubled what was produced the previous two years combined. A total of 2,599 were produced in 2020 alone. Of this number, 407 were produced in the first quarter; another 626 in the second quarter; 663 in the third quarter and 903 in the fourth quarter.

The shows that the number of movies produced in Quarter one of 2021 was 416 compared to 903 produced in Quarter four of 2020. This figure indicates a decline of -53.93% quarter on quarter.

Similarly, the number of movies produced in Quarter one 2020 stood at 407, indicating a growth of 2.21% year on year.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital churned out the highest number of movies by location in Quarter one of 2021 with 149 movies closely followed by Onitsha with 140 movies, Abuja with 107 movies. Port Harcourt produced 12, Kano four while Benin City and Bauchi recorded the least with 2 movies each respectively.
