The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has asked all Pay Subscription Broadcasters in Nigeria, including GOTv, DSTV, NTA Startimes, FreeTv Platform, among others, to decrypt all local channels on their bouquets to enable subscribers to their services have access to daily reports and directives on the Coronavirus pandemic without hindrance
The Commission which disclosed this through a press release signed by management said the decryption is to last for one month in the first instance adding it will issue further directives on this after detailed assessments of subsequent development.
The NBC which had earlier requested broadcast stations to ensure timely basic information and updates on the subject matter disclosed that daily broadcast monitoring reports so far show that broadcast stations across Nigeria have been giving detailed reportage on the campaign for awareness on Corona Virus.
It noted with dismay however that a few broadcasters aired unsubstantiated news and names of persons purportedly infected by the virus without required professional authentication.
While commending broadcasters that have remained steadfast and displayed professionalism in this period, the Commission further mandated broadcasters to allot at least, 10% of their daily airtime to public enlightenment on the virus, in line with National interest and Social Responsibility, as enshrined in the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
