Online Publisher Detained, Queried Over Source of Story

On June 2, 2020, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Asaba, Delta State, detained a journalist and co-publisher of Secret Reporters, Mr. Tega Oghenedoro, popularly known by the pseudonym, Fejiro Oliver, allegedly at the instance of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, following a story written by the journalist alleging a robbery incident in the Delta State Government House.

The story which appeared online at https://secretsreporter.com/ on May 28, 2020, was titled, “Exclusive: Despite Millions Paid to Security, Armed Robbers Mug Gov. Okowa Right Inside Government House Asaba.” The story has however been taken down from the site.

The journalist was summoned by the DSS to itsAsaba Command for questioning and was detained when he honoured the summon.

Tega was released the same day at 8.20 pm and instructed to return in the morning of June 3 for further interrogation.

While returning to the DSS office on June 3, Tegadisclosed that the Delta State Government was interested in the source of the information for the story. He also disclosed that while he was under their detention, men of the DSS had stormed his hotel accommodation in search of his laptop and other electronic gadgets.
