The Law Faculty of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom is inviting applications for the Oxford Global Summer Institute on Artificial Intelligence and Media Governance 2026 programme from scholars, policymakers, civil society leaders, and professionals who are interested in shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and media policy.
Taking place in Oxford, the programme brings together participants from around the world at a time when digital governance is rapidly changing.
As countries rethink issues of sovereignty, cooperation, regulation, and control over digital systems, the Institute offers a space to reflect, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations about how AI and media should be governed in an increasingly complex global landscape.
Over two intensive weeks, participants will dive into the pressing challenges of AI and media governance. Through seminars, case studies, and group discussions, they will explore how authority is exercised and contested in digital spaces, from content moderation and platform regulation to AI supply chains and cross-border data policies.
Real-world examples will bring these issues to life, such as internet shutdowns during elections in Uganda, network disruptions in Iran, and debates over sovereign AI in countries like Ethiopia, France, and India. The programme also looks at how regulatory decisions intersect with development and inequality, highlighting experiences from Brazil, South Africa, and other Global South countries navigating complex digital landscapes.
The Institute draws on Oxford’s strengths across disciplines, bringing together speakers from academia, government, civil society, and the private sector. Participants will hear diverse perspectives and take part in discussions that connect theory to real-world policy challenges.
This year, special attention will be given to the perspectives of the Global South. Participants will explore how middle and smaller powers are pushing back against powerful actors, including Big Tech, and working to create fairer and more inclusive digital rules.
The programme is designed for active engagement. Small-group discussions, workshops, and reflection sessions allow participants to connect their own professional experience with what they learn at the Institute. It is an opportunity to pause, step back from daily routines, and gain fresh insights from people around the world.
The 2026 Oxford Global Summer Institute runs for two weeks in July 2026.
Interested persons should please apply here, and for inquiries, please get in touch with the institute by sending an email to pcmlp@csls.ox.ac.uk.
The deadline for submission of applications is April 21, 2026.
