The Reuters Journalism Fellowship is calling for applications from ambitious, high-achieving journalists with a minimum of five years’ experience and a high level of written and spoken English who are interested in developing their academic understanding of the media industry.
Reuters Institute Journalism Fellows who are accepted will be expected to spend one, two or three terms at the University of Oxford which is one of the world’s leading universities. The programme seeks to improve their knowledge and focus on an in-depth piece of research away from the pressure of tight deadlines.
It also seeks to provide Fellows with a deep understanding of the major issues and challenges in the changing media industry which are key to success in the industry. The fellowship will build journalists’ practice in an evolving landscape and improve their capacity for agile thinking.
Fellows picked will be joining a diverse pool of individuals from around the world including journalists, editors, broadcasters, columnists and freelancers. They are required to demonstrate a desire to focus on media related research during their time at the Reuters Institute.
The activities which the Reuters Institute Journalism Fellows are expected to engage in during the fellowship period include:
- Producing a research paper which will be published and promoted by the Reuters Institute. This is usually an Oxford academic paper done with the help of experienced supervisors working alongside the fellows.
- Attending seminars by a diverse and high-level range of guest speakers who will share their insights into key industry trends and developments.
- Visiting world-class news organisations which will help Fellows gain insights into how they are approaching industry challenges. Previous visits have included trips to Thomson Reuters, The Financial Times, The BBC, The Economist and The Guardian.
- Trips to key UK cultural and political organisations and institutions. Previous such destinations have included Oxfam, the House of Commons and Stratford-upon-Avon, home of Shakespeare.
- Exchanging ideas and experiences with a diverse and international peer group of about 25 Fellows from high-level media organisations around the world which is the usual intake per year. This will help strengthen fellows’ networks, develop a global set of contacts and help them gain insights into international trends and developments.
- Benefit from the extensive learning facilities offered by the University of Oxford, including the world-famous Bodleian Library and access to various seminars and lectures across the university.
Fellows can also, and are encouraged to, engage with the university’s cutting-edge specialist research facilities, including centres for African, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Eastern and Western European, Japanese and Chinese studies. They will also be granted visiting scholar status of Green Templeton College.
