The Rory Peck Awards is now accepting entries for its 2019 annual awards, a programme designed to  celebrate the work of freelance cameramen and women in news and current affairs around the world.

The award that was established in 1995 celebrates freelance videojournalists, filmmakers and news camera operators who contribute so much to today’s international newsgathering. The Awards celebrate their work and demonstrate why freelancers deserve support and recognition.

Entries to the 2019 Rory Peck Awards are currently invited in three categories including Rory Peck Award for News (up to 10 mins); Rory Peck Award for News Features (up to 20 mins) and Sony Impact Award for Current Affairs (up to 60 mins)

The award welcomes self-funded work and entries from freelancers living and working in regions where it may be difficult to operate.

Interested participants must have their entries shot by the entrant(s) who must be a freelance cameraman/woman, filmmaker, or videojournalist. For the purposes of the Rory Peck Awards, the term “freelance” is defined as someone who is gathering and generating stories for professional broadcast and online news and current affairs platforms. He/she will not have a permanent or rolling contract or salary but may be on a retainer with one or more organisation(s), works to commission or be paid by the piece. This can include those who, at times, may be required to supplement their income by other means.

There are three award categories including:

Rory Peck Award for News, sponsored by Google: This award honours the work of freelance cameramen/women in the coverage of one news event where the focus is on the immediacy of the story. Broadcast news packages & agency feeds are accepted in this category. Portfolio submissions & camera rushes are not. (Duration: up to 10 minutes.)

Rory Peck Award for News Features: This award honours the work of freelance cameramen/women in news features that look beyond the immediacy of the news. (Duration: up to 20 minutes.)

Sony Impact Award for Current Affairs: This award honours the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in long-form current affairs examining a single issue, story or situation that has an impact on the viewer, policy or public awareness. (Duration: up to 60 minutes.)

Interested applicants must complete and submit their applications online (preferred option), otherwise they may download a Word version from the Rory Peck Awards website and email to awards@rorypecktrust.org. Non-English versions of the criteria and entry form are available on request.

Once the form is submitted, a confirmation email with instructions on how to upload master material to the Sony Ci Media Cloud will be sent to applicants’ email. Entry must be submitted as broadcast and supplied as a high resolution digital film file (preferred .MOV H264 (1920 x 1080)) without timecodes. It should be clearly labelled with the name of the entrant and entry title.

Entries not in English must be accompanied by a detailed and accurate storyline and translation, uploaded with the online entry form or emailed with the Word entry form to awards@rorypecktrust.org. For further information, please contact the Awards team on +44 (0)20 3219 7861 or awards@rorypecktrust.org.
