The Society of Environmental Journalists, a North American membership association of professional journalists dedicated to more and better coverage of environment-related issues, has announced an open call for applications for its Stringer Foundation 2025 grant cycle, inviting brave independent journalists worldwide to apply for financial support and global recognition.
At a time when disinformation is widespread and independent journalism faces unprecedented threats, the Foundation stresses the importance of sustaining courageous reporting. Its global network aims to bolster the impact of frontline journalists and foster collaboration among those committed to defending truth and accountability.
The Foundation’s mission is to protect journalists who face threats from governments, criminal networks, and powerful corporate interests. Many of these reporters work in isolation and with limited institutional backing as they expose corruption, human rights abuses, and other injustices. The Stringer Foundation seeks to provide not only funding but also a global community that offers solidarity, visibility, and, when necessary, shelter.
Applications are open to practitioners across a wide range of public media formats, including writing, photography, film, video, visual art, public poetry, music, and theatre. The Foundation defines journalism broadly, emphasising its commitment to supporting creative storytellers who use public platforms to investigate abuses of power and champion truth.
Grant amounts are expected to range from $10,000 to $100,000, depending on the total funds raised. A donor has covered all administrative costs for this cycle, ensuring that every dollar contributed goes directly to journalists in need.
Applications remain open until December 31, 2025. For more information, please visit: https://www.sej.org/calendar/deadline-stringer-foundation-grants
