The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), a think-tank on broadcasting issues and an advocacy body for the broadcast industry in Nigeria, at its second National Conference held in Kano on November 23, 2025, has cautioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) against closing campus radio stations, noting that doing so would hurt the development of young media practitioners. .
The conference, which was held at the Coronation Hall in Kano Government House, brought together government officials and media stakeholders. Representatives of the governors of Kano, Borno, and Bauchi States were present, along with the Kaduna State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr Ahmed Maiyaki.
SNB National President, Mr Umar Pate, expressed concern that NBC’s recent regulatory moves may restrict or close down campus radio stations, which he described as essential training centres for Mass Communication students. He called on the federal government to intervene and urged NBC to approve more broadcast licenses for universities and polytechnics in line with national accreditation standards.
He also appreciated the Kano State Government for supporting the conference.
On his part, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr Ahmed Muhammad, praised the SNB leadership and described the event as a valuable platform for developing young broadcasters. New members were also inducted during the conference.
Representatives from Borno and Bauchi States pledged continued support to the Society’s efforts to improve journalism standards nationwide.
Delivering the message of the Kano State Governor, Mr Sanusi Bature, the Director General of Media and Publicity, and Official Spokesperson for the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, said the governor remains committed to working with SNB to strengthen news production and new media content.
