The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards, a major annual awards programme for short films devoted to supporting and elevating independent filmmakers and creators from across the globe, has opened entries for the 2027 edition, giving independent filmmakers worldwide the opportunity to showcase their creativity on a global stage. Entry is free, and filmmakers at every stage of their careers are encouraged to submit their short films.
Now in its fifth year, the awards continue to recognise emerging talent while helping filmmakers develop their skills, expand their networks, and gain valuable industry experience.
A total of 34 shortlisted filmmakers will be flown to Los Angeles for a four-day industry program at the Sony Pictures Studios lot. During the program, participants will take part in workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, screenings, demonstrations, studio tours, and question-and-answer sessions led by Sony Pictures executives. The experience offers a rare look into both the creative and business sides of filmmaking.
The programme will end with a red-carpet awards ceremony at Sony Pictures Studios, where shortlisted filmmakers will celebrate their achievements while connecting with fellow creatives and industry professionals.
In addition to receiving flights and accommodation for the Los Angeles program, shortlisted filmmakers will have the opportunity to compete for category prizes, including Sony camera equipment, Meta virtual reality devices, and cash awards.
The 2027 edition introduces a new Immersive category, presented by Meta, which recognises storytelling created through immersive technologies. This addition joins the existing Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, Student, and Future Format categories, bringing the total number of competition categories to six. Winners will be selected from shortlisted entries in each category.
Another new addition is the Snapdragon Shorts Award, where five filmmakers selected from the 2027 shortlist will receive Snapdragon-powered devices, including a smartphone and laptop, to produce an original short film. The overall winner will earn an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii for the official announcement and film premiere at the Snapdragon Summit, along with exposure to millions of members of the Snapdragon Insiders community.
The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards celebrate filmmakers shaping the future of cinema. Open to independent filmmakers worldwide, the competition offers a platform to gain international recognition while learning directly from leading professionals in the film industry.
