The Programme on Conflict and Development (ConDev) at Texas A&M University in the United States is inviting students from accredited universities worldwide to apply for its Student Media Grant Programme (SMGP) for the 2023-2024 academic year to enable them to explore the transformative role of hospitality and tourism in mediating conflict worldwide.

Funded by Texas A&M’s Howard G. Buffett Foundation Endowed Chair on Conflict and Development, the SMGP has empowered students to capture the human stories underlying significant global issues through photos, interviews, and other media since 2013. This year, ConDev is collaborating with the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management, and Tourism to investigate the impact of hospitality and tourism on global conflict and development issues.

The theme for the 2023-2024 programme “The Role of Tourism and Hospitality in Supporting Families and Communities to Avoid Conflict, thrive during Conflict, or Recover from Conflict” is to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the installation of Howard G. Buffett’s photography collection at Texas A&M University, as well as to celebrate the inauguration of the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management, and Tourism within Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The selection criteria for proposals for the 2023-2024 SMGP encompasses the thematic focus of the project, the motivation behind the work, detailed plans for activities over a two-month period, and a structured budget and travel plan.

Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at any accredited university worldwide and graduating students from 2023 are also eligible to apply.

Successful applicants will each receive up to $5,000 to support their travels after securing necessary approvals from their university and relevant entities.

Students participating in the SMGP will be expected to demonstrate a two-month minimum engagement within their selected issue of focus, utilizing various media, including photo-journalism, to convey their findings on ConDev’s social media and website. Additionally, their work is expected to be published or exhibited in a refereed media format.

The application period runs from October 1 to November 30, 2023.
