The Trust Conference, Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global forum that convenes experts, innovators, and activists at the forefront of shaping free and equitable societies, trustworthy institutions and inclusive and sustainable economies, is billed to take place on October 22 and 23, 2024 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, United Kingdom.

The flagship annual event will this year attract over 600 delegates from more than 60 countries, including journalists, human rights advocates, global corporations, lawyers, and government representatives who will engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: media freedom, digital rights, climate change, socio-economic inclusion, and responsible business models.

For two days, with an agenda designed to foster deep engagement and offer actionable insights, the Conference will feature an array of panel discussions, fireside chats, interactive presentations, and networking opportunities.

The first day of the conference will delve into the complexities surrounding global democracy as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into our digital landscape. Attendees will explore how media professionals and newsrooms can uphold the principles of good journalism amidst rapid technological changes. Key discussions will focus on the challenges faced by media professionals operating from exile and innovative approaches to maintaining journalistic integrity while embracing AI advancements. Sessions will also examine strategies to counteract legal attacks on those defending media freedom, providing a crucial platform for voices from marginalized and threatened media outlets.

The second day will pivot to the broader societal implications of AI and the role of responsible businesses in navigating these changes. Delegates will explore international frameworks for AI governance and the ethical challenges associated with AI’s integration into the corporate sector. In-depth discussions will analyze how AI is revolutionizing the legal profession, focusing on whether it is democratizing access to justice or creating new barriers. Additionally, the Thomson Reuters Foundation will unveil the latest insights from its leading voluntary corporate disclosure initiative, impacting over 10 million workers worldwide. This presentation will be coupled with discussions on the future of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria and responsible business practices, highlighting the evolving landscape of corporate accountability and sustainability.

The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, situated in the heart of London, offers an iconic and strategic setting for the Trust Conference. Located opposite Westminster Abbey and within walking distance of the Thames and St James’s Park, the venue provides easy access to major sights and transport links. Delegates can conveniently reach the conference from five international airports: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Luton, and London City, with just a one-hour transfer.

Journalist, Two Others Arrested, Remain in Prison Three Months After for Alleged Cybercrime

Mr. Koko Robson, a reporter with a local newspaper, The Waves, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, along with two others – Victor Akpan and Okon Ben who were arrested by the Police in May 2024 over alleged cybercrime and remanded in prison have remained incarcerated three months after their arrest.

The three men were accused of publishing materials on Facebook, accusing the village head of Ikot Ebidang in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Ukpe Alfred, of embezzling N45 million given to the village by an oil company, Sterling Global Ltd.

Mr. Japheth Japheth, the prosecution counsel from the Akwa Ibom State Police headquarters told the court that the publication was false and intended to cause “annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction to the peace the community” and to intimidate and caused “hatred and ill-will” against the village head.

Mr. Japhet has moved the case through three courtrooms – from a Magistrate Court in Uyo to a Federal High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, and then to a State High Court in Awa, Akwa Ibom State.

Although they were initially charged with cyberstalking, the charge was later amended to defamation of character, which the prosecution said is punishable under Section 332 of the Criminal Code CAP Vol 2 Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, 2022.

They were initially remanded in Uyo prison before being moved to Eket prison where they are currently being held.
