On September 5, 2026, five journalists who were returning by bus from the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano after covering the rally of the Tinubu Support Group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were attacked by thugs armed with various projectiles, including sticks, stones, machetes, and knives, injuring the vehicle’s driver and some of the journalists.
According to media reports, they were attacked around the City Campus of North West University in Kofar Nasarawa, Kano State. The thugs smashed the windows and damaged a Radio Nigeria, Pyramid FM vehicle which was conveying the journalists from the stadium.
The journalists attacked included four staff of Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM and a journalist with Guarantee Radio. The driver sustained injuries during the attack, while some of the journalists were hit and injured by broken glass from the damaged vehicle.
Three policemen were also present in the vehicle during the attack. Mr Yakubu Abubakar Gwagwarwa, who works with Pyramid Radio in Kano and is one of the victims of the assault, recounted that despite the presence of three police men in the vehicle, the thugs attacked them. He said the thugs repeatedly smashed the windows and damaged parts of the bus, and although they quickly turned back, the thugs still pursued them.
As of the time of the writing of this report, no arrests were reported.
