The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), headquartered in Paris, France, in partnership with the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI), has released a special issue of the  Journal of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (JAISD), reinforcing its commitment to advancing the responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into judicial systems worldwide.

The special issue of JAISD also invites submissions that examine core questions at the intersection of artificial intelligence and legal systems.

IRCAI is a UNESCO Centre in Artificial Intelligence with headquarters in Slovenia that provides a coordination point for approaches to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that make use of AI.

The Journal of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development serves as a leading platform for scholarly research advancing the sustainable and ethical deployment of AI technologies, including this new focus on the justice sector.

Through its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Rule of Law Programme, UNESCO is equipping judicial professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the opportunities and complexities posed by AI on justice. Since 2022, the programme has trained more than 11,000 judges, prosecutors, court staff, and legal practitioners, through online and in-person sessions, demonstrating a global commitment to judicial education and capacity building.

Working with a broad network of international experts, researchers, and practitioners, UNESCO is cultivating a robust environment for interdisciplinary exchange and practical impact in legal settings. This special journal issue reflects UNESCO’s continued mission to bridge research and practice, enabling deeper critical reflection on AI’s transformative role in justice sectors.

Researchers, technologists, legal professionals, and policymakers worldwide are encouraged to contribute work on topics, including:  AI’s impact on access to justice, procedural fairness, and the everyday operations of legal professionals; Technological innovations that increase judicial efficiency while protecting independence and accountability; Case studies of AI implementation across various jurisdictions and legal traditions; Collaborative models between technology developers and justice professionals; and Initiatives in promoting AI literacy, governance, and capacity-building within legal institutions to the JAISD journal.

The journal issue is steered by an international team of distinguished experts, including Catherine Régis, Full Professor at the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Law and Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy; Jake Okechukwu Effoduh, Assistant Professor at Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Toronto Metropolitan University; and Cristina Godoy Bernardo de Oliveira, Professor of Law at Ribeirão Preto Law School, University of São Paulo.
