The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and LG AI Research, the artificial intelligence think tank of LG Group have announced collaboration to develop a global Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This initiative aims to promote the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies.
The course, based on the Global Recommendation on the Ethics of AI adopted by UNESCO Member States in 2021, will offer comprehensive educational materials and foster capacity-building initiatives. It is designed to equip AI practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and advocates with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the ethical landscape of AI, addressing critical topics such as bias mitigation, privacy safeguards, transparency, and human oversight.
The announcement was made during a signing ceremony at the AI Seoul Summit on May 22, 2024. The ceremony had in attendance prominent figures including Dr. Kyunghoon Bae, President of LG AI Research, and Ms. Soohyun Kim, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok.
Dr. Kyunghoon Bae expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Aligning with our vision of improving lives through AI, this partnership with UNESCO, a leader in global AI ethics policy and discourse, is highly significant. We look forward to fruitful outcomes through collaboration across businesses, international organizations, academia, and civil society to ensure AI’s responsible and trustworthy development within a framework of global trust.”
Ms. Soohyun Kim emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting, “This partnership is crucial in addressing the complexities of AI governance and ensuring its responsible and ethical development on a global scale. Together, we are cultivating a global community dedicated to ethical AI practices.”
The development of the Ethics of AI MOOC goes beyond creating an educational course. It aims to cultivate a global community of AI champions committed to ethical practices.
