The United Nations (UN) General Assembly at its 68th Session decided to proclaim November 2 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists and called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to facilitate its implementation.

UNESCO is to do this in consultation with relevant entities of the United Nations system, in collaboration with Governments and relevant stakeholders and mindful of the provisions of the annex to Economic and Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980.

This is also complementary to the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, endorsed by the United Nations System Chief Executives
