Independent and freelance photojournalists around the world have been invited to submit entries for the 2026 Independent and Freelance Photojournalist Award (IFPA), an international competition that seeks to recognise outstanding visual journalism that documents urgent, underreported, and impactful issues.
The award forms part of Xposure’s wider programme of international photography and visual storytelling initiatives, held annually in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The event brings together photographers, filmmakers, and other industry professionals through exhibitions, screenings, stage talks, workshops, and discussions, and provides an opportunity for independent photojournalists to have their work recognised and showcased before an international audience.
Xposure also hosts international photography and film awards and other initiatives, including the Global Focus Project, aimed at highlighting impactful visual storytelling.
According to the organisers, the IFPA recognises excellence in independent visual reporting across three categories, namely: Spot News, Environment, and Solutions. Each of the three category winners will receive a US$5,000 cash prize, with the organisers recognising three winners annually, one in each category.
The organisers said the award is designed to support independent photojournalists and amplify visual storytelling that informs audiences, challenges conventional narratives, and brings important stories to global attention. The competition places particular emphasis on the credibility and integrity of photojournalism.
Entrants may submit one 12-image photo essay in each category, with submissions expected to address urgent, underreported, or impactful issues from around the world.
According to the organisers, submitted images must provide an accurate and honest account of events and must not involve manipulation, alteration, or distortion that undermines their documentary value, as the award’s rules emphasize ethical standards, integrity, and impartiality as fundamental principles of photojournalism.
The Spot News category provides an opportunity for photographers to document breaking events and developments of major public interest through compelling visual narratives.
The Environment category focuses attention on environmental issues and stories that illuminate the relationship between people, communities, and the natural world.
The Solutions category provides space for visual journalism that highlights responses to major social, humanitarian, or environmental challenges.
By dividing the award into these three categories, the organisers seek to encourage photojournalists not only to document crises and breaking events but also to tell stories about environmental challenges and efforts to address pressing problems.
The organisers said Xposure is committed to supporting photojournalism and using visual storytelling to raise awareness and encourage dialogue on conservation, environmental, and humanitarian issues.
Independent and freelance photojournalists interested in participating have until October 1, 2026, to submit their entries.
