Call for Entries Open for 9thSocial Impact Media Awards

SIMA Studios, a non-profit impact media agency based in Los Angeles in the United States, has announced a call for entries for its ninth annual SIMA Awards, with calls for creative films that raise important questions about the state of the contemporary world, as well as production companies and funders committed to impacting storytelling that inspires activism and social transformation.

SIMA,  since inception in 2012, promotes global awareness, social justice, human rights and education by supporting independent content creators and media artists on the front-lines of social change and bringing their work into communities and classrooms around the globe. The Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) started as the first documentary and educational media competition honouring members of both the independent film and global humanitarian industries.

The annual SIMA AWARDS are the official global media competition of SIMA STUDIOS, a 501(c)3 non-profit impact media agency. The 9th annual SIMA Awards will celebrate eye-opening impact cinema that exemplifies excellence in its potential to inspire social change.

Since 2012, the annual SOCIAL IMPACT MEDIA AWARDS have set new standards of creativity and integrity in social impact storytelling, honouring eye-opening documentary filmmaking and VR experiences that exemplify excellence in their potential to inspire social change. Each year, projects are selected from over 140 countries around the world, competing for awards, cash prizes, media features, and entry into SIMA’s impact distribution channels.

By  2019 SIMA Award honourees featured Production Companies and Funders for their unique commitments to advancing social impact storytelling.

The current ceremony, tagged  #SIMA2021 OPEN CALL,   will look for original, wise, brave, eye-opening and creative productions that increase the awareness of viewers to local and global issues, to the resilience of humans facing deprivation, to the politics and movements of human rights, environmental and social justice, and to efforts and agents of change worldwide.

Entry Categories include: Feature Documentaries, Short Documentaries, Virtual Reality (VR) Films, Production Companies and Funders

Applicants are also expected to submit feature Documentaries, Short Documentaries, Virtual Reality (VR)/ 360 Films and Impact Videos by October 28, 2020 to #SIMA2021. Finalists will be announced on January 12, 2021 and Winners on February 10, 2021.

The 9th Annual SIMA Awards ceremony is powered by VICE Impact, Human Sustainability Project, CTLST, The Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC), WITNESS and SEED & SPARK.

SIMA’s international distribution channels: SIMAx and SIMA Classroom maximize the impact and exposure of the best films from its annual awards. Through unique partnerships and collaborations with changemakers, organizations and educational institutions, the organisation brings social impact storytelling into classrooms and communities worldwide, cultivating awareness, education and engagement from the grassroots level and up.
