The Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business is now accepting applications for its Journalists in Residence Programme for the Spring of 2025. The programme is tailored for mid-career journalists from around the world who are eager to deepen their understanding of political economy and enhance their reporting skills on the intersection of politics and economics.

Launched in 2017, the programme is part of the Stigler Center’s mission to enrich public debate by providing journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to analyze and report on economic and political dynamics effectively. With the media playing a critical role in uncovering market behaviors and potential wrongdoings, the program seeks to shape the next generation of business reporters by equipping them with a solid foundation in economic theory and practice.

Participants of the 12-week residency programme will immerse themselves in the academic environment of the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus. The programme component includes exclusive seminars and workshops where selected journalists will engage with world-class faculty at Chicago Booth and other university departments.

The programme also features academic engagement where participants will audit three classes, gaining exposure to key business fundamentals and advanced topics in political economy. They are expected to participate actively in class discussions, complete readings, and attend various Stigler Center lectures and events.

It offers extensive opportunities to collaborate with Booth faculty, students, and fellow journalists, fostering professional connections and collaborations that extend beyond the residency. Journalists will have a designated study space, opportunities to contribute to the ProMarket publication, and receive a certificate of participation upon successful completion of the programme.

A stipend of $14,000 will be provided to cover living expenses during the programme. Additionally, the programme reimburses economy-class airfare to and from Chicago, along with SEVIS and visa application fees.

Journalists interested in applying must demonstrate proficiency in English and have relevant media experience. The programme is open to journalists working in all forms of media globally, and it seeks to bring together a diverse cohort of participants.

Participants are required to attend and engage actively in all academic and extracurricular activities. They must sign a letter of agreement with the Stigler Center, confirming their commitment to the programme’s guidelines and expectations.

The deadline for submission is set for October 13, 2024. Final decisions will be communicated to applicants by December 2024. The program is scheduled to run from March 19 to May 31, 2025.
