Africa Uncensored, a leading public-interest investigative journalism company based in Nairobi, Kenya, dedicated to uncovering the truth and holding those in power accountable, and DW Akademie, Deutsche Welle’s centre for international media development, journalism training, and knowledge transfer, have announced a call for applications for the AI in the Newsroom Fellowship, a six-month intensive programme designed to bridge the gap between journalism and emerging technologies.

The Fellowship is a technical laboratory for journalists who want to build solutions. It also provides mentorship and a technical framework for journalists who are looking to adopt and use artificial intelligence (AI) tools or who are already using AI-assisted journalism and want to grow their skillset. From June to December 2026, selected fellows will work on building products for adoption in their newsrooms and work environments, as well as the development of bespoke AI workflows for editorial processes.

The Fellowship offers: technical upskilling, including deep dives into AI tools for data journalism, AI literacy trainings, and pairing with experts in the AI space; project mentorship and dedicated support to help fellows move from a “bottleneck” to a finished, polished tool that is ready to be deployed; collaborative network, such as a cohort of media professionals committed to raising the technical bar in journalism; and resource access, including hands-on experience with a dedicated sandbox of tools, and the frameworks needed to address emerging and existing challenges.

Eligible applicants include journalists, editors, and news content creators with an interest in AI-supported journalism. They must be able to define a clear use case stating how they plan to use AI tools to solve a challenge they have identified and use AI tools to advance their work. Fellows will be required to identify a concrete problem within their newsroom and demonstrate how their proposed AI prototype will help solve it. Additionally, applicants will be expected to submit a letter of commitment from their newsroom, or if a freelancer, a personal letter of commitment for the proposed project.

The application deadline is April 30, 2026. The Fellowship will commence in June 2026 and conclude by December 31, 2026.
