African Liberty, a platform that advances individual freedom, peace, and prosperity in Africa by promoting civil discussion and debate about social, legal, economic, and world issues affecting Africans, has called for entries for its 2026/2027 writing fellowship programme that aims to identify and cultivate promising African writers and equip them with the necessary skills to excel in writing opinion pieces (op-eds).
The African Liberty Writing Fellowship programme offers a great opportunity for young Africans who are passionate about writing and want to build a voice that can influence conversations across the continent.
The fellowship begins with a 5-week online training from May 25 to June 22, 2026, where selected participants are taught to write critically and effectively. After the training, successful candidates move on to the main writing fellowship, which runs from July 13, 2026, to July 13, 2027. The entire programme is conducted virtually, so individuals can participate from anywhere without needing to travel.
An important aspect of the programme is that, while it is a paid fellowship, payment only depends on performance as fellows are assessed monthly. Also, fellows only get paid after they are officially inducted into the fellowship.
A prospective applicant must be a student or a graduate of an African institution or an African studying outside the continent. There are no application or admission fees, so applying is completely free. However, the programme does not accept applications for senior fellowships.
The fellowship is organised by African Liberty, a platform that focuses on promoting freedom, peace, and prosperity in Africa. Since it was founded in 2007, it has been helping young Africans grow in writing, especially in areas like human rights, free expression, economic development, and public policy. Through its platform, fellows get the chance to publish articles, share ideas, and contribute to important discussions affecting Africa and the world.
For questions about the programme, applicants should reach out to the editor-in-chief, Ibrahim Anoba, via email at ianoba@africanliberty.org. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2026, so interested applicants are encouraged to apply before then. Apply at: https://www.tfaforms.com/5209099.
