Mid-career journalists with at least five years’ experience are invited to apply for the Reuters Journalist Fellowship 2021/22 at the prestigious University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

The programme is open to working journalists and editors from over 100 countries who will return to journalism after spending a few months completing their fellowship.

Fellows will further their understanding of journalism, the news industry and their place in it through personal research, seminars, networking events and discussions with their peers. They will also work on a project that will be of direct impact to them, their career, their newsroom and the wider media industry, bringing in what they learn during their time in the fellowship.

The programme accepts around 30 Journalist Fellows from around the world each year with each fellow bringing fascinating insights and a wealth of experience to the institute.

The Reuters Journalist Fellowship is unique as a result of the following:

  • Fellows will be embedded in a cutting-edge institution that is shaping key media debates. The Reuters Institute produces factsheets and reports on the main challenges of the industry.
  • Fellows will be part of an institution with a global outlook. Reuters’ Journalist Fellows come from all over the world. They share ideas and experiences of working in different countries and different mediums.
  • Fellows will be part of one of the world’s greatest universities. Oxford offers unrivalled study facilities, leading research centres, extensive learning support and a global reputation.
  • Fellows will be just one hour from London by train, providing convenient access to some of the world’s leading news publishers like The Guardian, the Financial Times and the BBC.

Each aspect of the programme is meant to increase Fellows’ appreciation of the challenges and the opportunities of the current news ecosystem from their personal study in the University of Oxford’s magnificent libraries to informal conversations with their global cohort of Journalist Fellows. It is designed to challenge Fellows, to offer a fresh perspective on their role as journalists, and to enable them to share and receive best practice on the issues that matter to them.

Most journalists on the programme are fully funded Fellows with successful applicants getting their fees covered and receiving a monthly stipend of £2,000, which will be enough to cover the cost of accommodation, food, and general living expenses. The programme also covers the cost of travel to and from the UK and any visa costs.

Additionally, some Journalist Fellows are employees of sponsoring organisations which run their own application process and selection criteria.

Reuters Fellowships last three or six months, depending on funding. Fellows begin in October, January or April, Reuters advises Fellows on the best days to arrive in Oxford and the programme calendar follows the university’s term dates.

Fellows on the Reuters Journalist Fellowship are not expected to do any professional work during the fellowship months and are expected to be at the programme during term time for the entire duration of the fellowship. They will be able to travel for short periods as long as they don’t miss any scheduled events.

Applications will reopen in November 2020 for the academic year 2021-2022 while the deadline for submission of applications is February 11, 2021.
