Coalition Condemns Murder of Journalist in Kwara State

The Coalition for Whistleblower Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) has condemned the murder of Mr.Yusuf Mubarak, a 27-year-old journalist in Kwara State, and extended its condolences to Mubarak’s family, friends, and the entire youth constituency of Kwara State who are mourning the loss of the promising young talent.

CWPPF said the circumstances surrounding the death of Yusuf are both shocking and deeply concerning. According to reports, Mr. Mubarak, a new media personality from Ilorin, went missing on September 13, 2023, and was discovered dead on September 16, 2023, at Unity Road in Ilorin, the state capital.

According to the Coalition, this loss has sent shockwaves through the media sphere and highlights the need for swift and thorough investigations. The groups expressed appreciation for Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s swift response to the tragedy and his call for a comprehensive investigation into Mr. Mubarak’s death. CWPPF said the demand for justice and accountability is paramount, and it urges security agencies to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the truth behind this drastic act.

Journalists, like Mr. Mubarak, according to CWPPF, play a vital role in our society by advocating for justice, good governance, and the free flow of information, adding that it is essential that their safety and security are guaranteed as they continue to serve as watchdogs of democracy.

The Coalition called for- a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation into the murder of Yusuf to ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice, as well as increased security measures to protect journalists and citizens in Kwara State from the rising threats of cult violence and other criminal activities.

CWPPF said it joined all concerned stakeholders in demanding justice for Yusuf and hopes that the truth behind this tragic loss will emerge, and that his family and loved ones may find solace.
