On June 14, 2022, operatives of Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, the Department of State Services (DSS), arrested a comedian and vlogger, Mr. Chukwu Emeka, popularly known on social media as Broda Mike in Benin City, Edo State, for allegedly inciting the public.
Reports have it that the comedian, Broda Mike, had been posting videos on his social media page, most of which addressed poor governance, insecurity and banditry and kidnapping etc. plaguing the country.
The DSS, following the arrest, secured a court order to detain Chukwu till July 7, 2022. However, on June 28, a High Court of justice, sitting in Benin, granted him bail. The court agreed with his counsel’s submission that the application for the remand of the comedian was unmeritorious and therefore admitted him to bail.
