Education Ministry gets steering committee on FOI Act

Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, the Permanent Secretary for the Federal Ministry of Education has inaugurated a 14-member Steering Committee to implement the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) for the Ministry.

The Committee is comprised mainly of Heads of Department, Directors of Legal, Press and Public Relations in the Ministry as well as Heads of SERVICOM and ACTU.  It is chaired by the Director of Human Resources Mr. Obi Ikibeh.

Dr. Nwaobiala said that the exercise was in compliance with the directive to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to constitute such Committees to ensure prompt response to request for information by the public under the provisions of the Act.

The steering committee will advise management on the propriety of release or non-release of information, ensure that information on activities, policies, structure, functions and all such matters required for public consumption as stated in the Act are published.

He asked the committee to ensure that the report of the implementation of the Act is filed and submitted within the stipulated time.

The Permanent Secretary charged the Committee to commence work immediately, nominate the Desk Officer and draw an appropriate schedule of duties.

Mr. Ikibeh, responding on behalf of other members of the Committee, assured that the assignment would be carried out with all sense of duty and responsibility.
