On May 27, 2020, Mrs. Chinyere Okoye, Assistant Manager of News and Current Affairs, at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Channel 6, Aba, in Abia State, was abducted by unknown gunmen in front of her house in Aba

She had returned home after supervising the 7 pm News bulletin and was reportedly waiting in front of her house waiting for a member of her family to open the gate for her when the gunmen swooped on her. The gunmen, who were suspected to have been in hiding waiting for her arrival, came out from their hideout and hijacked her car with which they drove her away.

Her husband reportedly called her line later in the night and was answered by one of the kidnappers who told him they would call him back later. When the abductors called the following morning they demanded an undisclosed amount as ransom.

Mrs. Okoye was however freed in the morning of May 29 after operatives of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police tactical units, acting on a tip-off, stormed a compound in Mgboko, Obete in Obingwa Local Government Area of the State where they found and released her from captivity.

Mrs. Okoye’s abduction came less than three weeks after a female presenter with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), (Pacesetters FM), Amakanma, Umuahia South LGA, of the state was abducted by unknown gunmen who released her after a few days.
