On November 13, 2023, Mr. Achadu Gabriel Idibia, who writes for Daybreak newspapers, was arrested in Kaduna and detained over a report published on September 24, 2023 titled “Kaduna Hajj camp, a national shame, men, women sleep together in overcrowded hall – investigation.”
He was detained in a correctional facility and questioned on why he wrote the story.
Achadu had earlier on September 24, been arrested and detained at a detention facility run by Special Police Unit “Operation Yaki” over the news report released on bail after a colleague, Amos Mathew of the New Nigeria Newspapers, stood surety for his bail.
He was arraigned on November 15 charged with defamation of character, intimidation, and incitement of contempt for religion. He was granted bail and released on November 16, with the case adjourned to November 28, 2023.
