On March 23, 2023, Mr. Nasiru Salisu Zango, a broadcast journalist, lodged a petition with the Director of the Department of State Service (DSS) in Kano State, alleging attempted assassination and death threats from political thugs whom he said were sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Nasiru, who currently serves as the Manager of News and Current Affairs at Freedom Radio, narrowly escaped a deadly attack at the APC campaign office along Club Road in Kano while on official assignment.

According to his legal adviser, Barr. Badamasi Sulaiman Gandu, on March 21, 2023, during a press briefing organized by APC officials, Nasiru, along with other journalists, was in attendance when some unidentified thugs started making threats against his life. He said despite feeling uneasy, the journalist carried on with his duties until he and a BBC reporter, Zaharaddeen, were invited by the APC legal adviser for an interview. He said Nasiru however stayed back as he had already heard the threats made against him.

Shortly after, Zaharaddeen was attacked by the thugs, prompting Nasiru to seek help from the APC officials and despite their attempts to reason with the thugs, they refused to back down and continued with their violent intentions. The Managing Director of Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), Baffa Babba DanAgundi, tried to provide a shield for Nasiru so he could leave unharmed, but the thugs persisted, and he eventually left the journalist behind.

His colleagues later informed him that the thugs were still after him and intended to track him down and kill him. Fearing for his life, Nasiru filed the petition to the DSS, urging the agency to act swiftly for his safety.
