MTN Group, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), in South Africa, and the African Editors Forum (TAEF), has launched a Pan-African Media Innovation Programme to support journalists across Africa. The goal of the programme is to help media professionals grow their skills and tell better stories that reflect the continent’s realities.
The programme runs for 12 weeks, combining online learning with in‑person engagement in Johannesburg. Participants will learn how to handle real challenges in the media space, such as digital transformation, sustainability of media businesses, ethics and law, entrepreneurship, and the impact of social media and new technologies on news.
Beyond the classroom, participants will gain practical experience through newsroom visits, sessions with experienced journalists, and study trips. These activities are designed to help them apply what they learn in real-life situations and improve their everyday work.
One of the key benefits of the programme is the network it builds. Participants will connect with journalists, editors, and media leaders from different African countries, creating lasting professional relationships. The programme is best suited for mid- to senior-level journalists who are committed to ethical reporting and are open to new ideas and global perspectives.
According to MTN’s leadership, a strong and reliable media industry is important for Africa’s development. The programme aims to equip journalists with the tools and knowledge they need to adapt to changes in the industry. Leaders from the University of Johannesburg and the African Editors Forum also highlight the importance of critical thinking, ethics, and innovation in shaping the future of journalism.
This initiative builds on MTN Nigeria’s earlier success and supports the African Union’s vision of an informed and empowered society. At a time when misinformation is rising, and public trust in the media is declining, the programme offers a timely opportunity to strengthen journalism across the continent.
