The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mallam Balarabe Ilelah, has urged newly licensed broadcast stations to live up to expectations by operating within the provisions of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, avoiding broadcasting sensationalism and fake news and also not allow themselves to be carried away by religious or ethnic sentiments

Mallam Ilelah made the call on October 4, 2021 while presenting letters of provisional approval to companies, organisations and institutions of higher learning for the 159 newly licensed radio, television and community radio stations at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The NBC DG had on September 26, 2021 announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of 159 new radio and television stations in Nigeria.

Mallam Ilelah disclosed to the successful applicants for radio and television licences that no fewer than 300 applications for radio and television stations were recommended to President Buhari through the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture for approval but 159 of these applications were approved by the President.

He told the new licencees that “You went through a very rigorous security check. A total of almost 300 applications for radio and television stations were sent to the President through the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture for approval.”

“The ministry processed the applications and forwarded them to the Presidency, but fortunately, a total of 159 applications were approved by the President.

The DG further revealed that 65 applications that were still pending with the President and seven applications were rejected for undisclosed security reasons.

Meanwhile, he enjoined them to live up to expectations and operate within the provision of the National Broadcasting Code to avoid being deviated.

He also warned them: “You must not allow your stations to be used as platforms to destroy Nigeria. You must use your license to build and not to destroy the nation,” adding that the Commission will not hesitate to revoke any license that operates contrary to the provision of the law.

He said the licenses were not granted to jeopardise national security, but to promote national interest and foster unity in our diversity.

Prof. Mohammed Yahaya, Founder, ENUMAN Community Radio, Bida, Niger State, who responded on behalf of the licensees, assured him that they would justify the confidence the presidency reposed in them by abiding by the broadcasting code.
