A reporter who works with BBC Pidgin, simply identified as Michael, was on June 12, 2021 assaulted by an officer of the Nigeria Police while covering Democracy Day activities at Mokola in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The police officer identified as S. A. Oke attacked Michael and slapped him and seized his mobile phone handset while he was recording the harassment of protesters by security operatives.
The police officer also vowed to kill any protester who refused to listen to orders, saying protest was ‘illegal on democracy day’.
