OpenAI, an American Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and deployment company, has launched a hub for news organisations designed to help journalists, editors, and publishers harness the power of AI. The initiative is being launched in partnership with the American Journalism Project (AJP), a venture philanthropy investing in and building digital nonprofit newsrooms, and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, an organisation based in the United States that provides free tools and resources for local journalism leaders to develop sustainable strategies to serve their communities.
According to OpenAI, “Journalism is essential to a healthy democracy. People depend on reliable local and national reporting to understand their communities and the world around them. We are committed to supporting news organisations, helping them adopt AI responsibly and convening the right people to advance the industry.”
The initiative was first shared at the AI and Journalism Summit, co-hosted by the Brown Institute for Media Innovation and Hearst, which brought together leaders from newsrooms, academia, and the technology sector. The OpenAI hub offers hands-on training, practical playbooks, and real-world examples designed to help newsroom teams save time and focus on high-impact reporting, from investigative research and fact-gathering to operational and business efficiency.
Key features of the Hub include:
- On-demand training: Courses such as AI Essentials for Journalists introduce core AI concepts and newsroom-relevant use cases, while advanced sessions explore technical tools and custom solutions for business needs.
- Practical applications: Training focuses on investigative research, translation and multilingual reporting, data analysis, and newsroom efficiency.
- Open-source resources: Shared projects and materials allow news organisations to adapt AI tools to their specific needs.
- Responsible use guidance: Tips and examples help organisations develop internal policies and governance frameworks for AI deployment.
The Hub builds on years of collaboration with journalism partners, including AJP and The Lenfest Institute, supporting local news organisations as they adopt AI responsibly to enhance reporting, accelerate product development, and explore innovative business solutions. Partnerships with global publishers and industry groups have informed the Hub’s focus on practical guidance, transparency, and learning grounded in real newsroom needs.
OpenAI recognises that AI adoption raises questions around trust, accuracy, and workforce impact. The Hub is designed with these realities in mind, providing journalists and publishers with practical tools while fostering responsible implementation.
OpenAI has long supported a healthy news ecosystem, helping over 800 million ChatGPT users access timely, high-quality information from trusted news sources. Current partnerships include News Corp, Axios, the Financial Times, Condé Nast, and Hearst, alongside collaborations with industry groups such as WAN-IFRA and INMA, delivering content in more than 20 languages worldwide.
In the coming year, OpenAI plans to expand the Hub with new courses, case studies, and live programming, providing journalists with tools to strengthen their work and supporting news organisations in building a sustainable, innovative future.
