On April 14, 2023, Ahmed Abubakar, a Police officer attached to the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCID), Federal Capital Territory, Abuja arrested and detained Kayode Jaiyeola, a photojournalist with The Punch newspapers, for taking pictures during Jumat service at the National Mosque.

Ahmed handed over the journalist to the police officers attached to the National Mosque after his arrest.

The photojournalist confirmed in a telephone conversation with his colleague that: “I have been detained at a police post at the National Mosque. I only came here on official duty to take pictures of the Jumat service, but police from the FCT FCID arrested me and handed me over to the police officers attached to the mosque.”

When contacted, Ahmed, the FCID official who arrested Kayode, said he had handed the photojournalist over to the police at the National Mosque and that his duty thereafter was to write his statement and document his arrest. He claimed he did not detain the journalist.
