Publisher of News Centre
On July 7, 2023, operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Enugu State Police Command arrested Mr. Mike Ilediagu, publisher of News Centre, an online blog, following the publication of a news item, titled, “Pandemonium in parts of Enugu as gunmen enforce sit-at-home, Air Force respond.”
Citing “orders from above,” the police operatives arrested Mike, even though he had pulled down the story when he got wind of his impending arrest.
Governor Mbah had banned the mandatory sit-at-home protests on Mondays in Southeast Nigeria ordered by the separatist group, ‘Indigenous People of Biafra’ (IPOB), and threatened to shut down markets that refused to open on Mondays.
Mike was released the same day following the intervention of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) President, Mr. Chris Isiguzo.
