On September 20, 2023, officers of the Nigerian Police Force attacked two journalists: Mr. Salim Ibrahim of Daily Trust newspaper, and Mr. Zahraddeen Lawal, BBC Hausa reporter, who were in the court to cover proceedings at the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
The operatives of the Nigeria Police who attacked them destroyed their gadgets.
Conflict erupted when the police officers on duty instructed the journalists to move about 10 meters away from the court premises. In the process, the officers confronted them and accused them of taking photographs.
Some police officers attacked the BBC reporter in an attempt to seize his phone, while others targeted the Daily Trust reporter and forcefully seized his phone, damaging the screen.
