The Pulitzer Center, a nonprofit organisation that funds independent reporting and public education on underreported global issues, is inviting applications from journalists worldwide for its AI Reporting Grants. The grants support in-depth, public-interest journalism on artificial intelligence (AI) and surveillance technologies. They are designed to fund investigative and accountability reporting that examines how AI systems are developed, deployed, and used in areas such as policing, healthcare, social welfare, employment, and governance, with a particular focus on their impact on communities and human rights.

The grant is open to staff and freelance journalists from any country. The Pulitzer Center is looking for strong reporting projects that explain how AI affects people’s daily lives. This includes stories on AI in public services, surveillance, healthcare, employment, criminal justice, environmental impacts, disinformation, and government policies. They are especially interested in stories that give a voice to people directly affected by these technologies.

Please note that applicants must submit a project summary of no more than 250 words explaining the story they plan to investigate and its significance, along with a preliminary budget outlining reporting costs and a distribution strategy detailing how the story will reach audiences.

The Pulitzer Center encourages collaboration among journalists, innovative audience engagement approaches, and proposals supported by expressions of interest or commitment from publishing outlets. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with particular interest in submissions from journalists and reporting teams in Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Both experienced and early-career journalists are encouraged to apply.

The Pulitzer Center welcomes applications from journalists working in different formats, including print, online, radio, photography, and documentary storytelling. It also supports collaborative reporting projects and encourages innovative approaches to audience engagement beyond traditional publication.

According to the Center, special attention will be given to stories that investigate transparency, accountability, governance, and the human impact of AI-driven technologies.

The initiative is particularly interested in receiving applications from journalists and reporting teams in Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
