Reporters Without Borders, a non-governmental organization based in Paris, France, that promotes and defends press freedom and the rights of journalists worldwide, is inviting applications for its Berlin Scholarship Programme titled: Empowering Journalists in the Digital Field.

Aimed at professional journalists, bloggers, media professionals and citizen journalists who wish to improve their digital skills and knowledge, the programme will be provided by Reporters Without Borders Germany in collaboration with the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises. It is scheduled to take place in 2024.

During their stay in Berlin, the scholarship holders can enjoy a break and will complete a comprehensive training programme on digital self-defense for journalists.

The scholarship program is designed for individuals who have been exposed to various forms of digital threats and have experienced digital violence, such as doxxing or impersonation. The main goal of the programme is to educate the participants about digital security, enabling them to improve their personal safety and the safety of their sources. Additionally, the programme is suitable for those who are interested in sharing their knowledge with colleagues in their home regions. Ideally, applicants should have some prior experience in teaching or other areas of knowledge transfer.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be willing and able to participate fully in the programme. This includes attending all programme activities, which will involve comprehensive training in digital security. During the training period, applicants are expected to allocate approximately 20 to 25 hours per week for the program.

In the selection process, positive consideration will be given to applicants who work as investigative journalists on topics such as the climate crisis, corruption, labour rights or migration.

The scholarship covers all travel costs and takes care of visa-related matters. Additionally, it provides and pays for an apartment in Berlin for the duration of the scholarship, grants a monthly allowance of 1000€, covers health insurance, and provides access to public transportation in Berlin.

During the scholarship period, fellows will participate in an extensive training programme in digital security with experienced trainers for several months. Moreover, scholarship holders will be given insights into the activities of Reporters Without Borders Germany, a globally active journalist and human rights organization, during their stay in Berlin.

Applicants must have a good command of English. They must have the intention to return to their country after the Scholarship.

Applications close December 4, 2023.
