Entries are now open  for the 2018 Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism, established to recognise the best financial reporting by journalists practicing in Africa, and publishing or broadcasting their work on the continent.

The awards which have been running for the 44th consecutive year represent the longest running awards dedicated to financial journalism in South Africa. The objective of the awards is to support the development of journalism on the continent.

In 2013, Sanlam introduced the category of The African Growth Story to recognize the significance of business and investment on the continent.

Entries for the awards should focus on the growth of the continent in terms of investments, infrastructure development, economic progress, and related topics. Stories can reflect a particular country’s perspective but should incorporate a continental outlook. The awards are open to journalists who practice in Africa and publish and/or broadcast their work in the continent.

The Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism is awarded for excellent achievement in financial reporting. It was established by Sanlam in 1974 to recognise the best financial journalism in South Africa, and since 2013 the scope was broadened to acknowledge the best financial journalism in the rest of the African continent. The awards recognise achievement in print, radio, TV and online reporting.

Judges presiding over the Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year Awards will bestow recognition in two broad classes: The Category Awards, and The Special Awards.

The category awards recognise the best financial journalism covering the following: Business/Companies; Economy; Financial Markets; Consumer Financial Education; the Africa Growth Story. The category Awards are open to journalists working in any medium (print, online, radio, TV, multimedia).

Categories for the Special Awards are:   Best Newcomer, Lifetime Achievement, and Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year. These winners on this category are selected through a nomination and debate process.

The closing date to submit entries is February 28, 2019.
