Paramilitary officers on August 21, 2023, manhandled journalists and barred them from covering the assumption of duty by Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the newly appointed Minister of Interior, after his swearing-in ceremony at the presidential villa in Abuja.

The Minister arrived the ministry at about 2:20 pm accompanied by a crowd of supporters.

The Minister was smuggled into the Minister’s conference hall by security officials who also prevented journalists from entering the hall because, according to them, the discussion was a “family matter”.

All explanations by journalists that they were invited to cover the event and that the assumption of a minister was a public event, fell on deaf ears. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ms Oluwatoyin Akinlade, ordered security operatives to throw out the journalists even though she invited them to the event.

The journalists left the venue after waiting for over two hours in the Minister’s Waiting Room to see if they could possibly interview the Minister on his plan for the ministry.
