The 17th Annual Highway Africa conference is calling for nominations for the Telkom – Highway Africa New Media Awards.
The award scheduled to hold during the Highway Africa Conference from September 1-2, 2013 at Rhodes University, South Africa is set to honour innovative use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in journalism that serves Africa and its citizens.
The call for nominations is for three new categories which are: Innovative newsroom; Best African ICT blog; and Innovative use of technology for community engagement.
The judges will consider the use of new media technologies to: advance newsroom operations, increase reach and diversifying content; encourage social empowerment amongst marginalised communities through relevant topical community and/or African issues and innovative use of online media interactions platforms; and highlight innovative and creative applications of technology for the benefit of the continent’s overall media development.

The Highway Africa Conference is a project of Rhodes University (Grahamstown, South Africa), in partnership with Telkom, Absa Barclays and MTN. Over the years the conference has been at the centre of Africa’s debates on the interface of journalism and new media.
