Thesheet.ng Holds Workshop on using Artificial Intelligence to Detect and Eliminate Fake News

The_Sheet_logo_Final-333The sheet.ng, and online medium will hold a workshop for selected journalists from traditional and online media, Active Citizens, Social Media Influencers and Civil Society on using artificial intelligence to, among others, detect and eliminate Fake News and inaccurate information from their reports.

Organized in partnership with the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Data Science Nigeria, the workshop will hold at the first Artificial Intelligence Hub in Nigeria (AI Hub) situated inside the University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria on August 16 and 17 2018 with the theme “ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, VIRTUAL REALITY AND THE MEDIA: Disrupting the impact of Fake News on Peace and National Cohesion in Nigeria’s 2019 General Elections”.

Mr. Edetaen Ojo, Executive Director of Media Rights Agenda (MRA) will be Guest Speaker alongside Mrs. Funke Egbemode, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors; Mr. Bayo Adekanmbi, Founder of Data Science Nigeria and Chief Transformation Officer of MTN Nigeria; and Alhaji. Lai Mohammed, Honourable Minister of Information and Culture.

Thesheet.ng a News Platform for Policy, Pop Culture & Politics where Artificial Intelligence (AI) Meets Journalism & Immersive Visual Storytelling in Nigeria, is organising the two-day workshop to equippe  journalists, Active Citizens, Social Media Influencers and Civil Society with the requisite skills and knowledge in line with global best practices using the best technology to combat the proliferation of Fake News.

The justification for the workshop is that Fake News has become a major threat to the practice of Ethical Journalism, and its proliferation through social media and other sources is the biggest impediment to the continuous peaceful co-existence of the Nigerian people since the end of the Civil War.

The Workshop is expected to teach participants how to use Artificial Intelligence to analyse news for sentiments and authenticity – it will also include Deep Learning Simulation Sessions for the participating Journalists where Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Internet of Things and Data Science to advance Journalism.
