The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), a global organization dedicated to protecting the rights of journalists and publishers worldwide, will host the first in-person edition of Digital Media Africa 2024 Conference at the Aga Khan University’s Graduate School of Media and Communications (AKU-GSMC) in Nairobi, Kenya, from September 17 to 19, 2024.

The conference will focus on accelerating digital transformation for African news publishers, securing and growing digital revenue, addressing the challenges and opportunities of digital revenue generation, and exploring the role of AI in African newsrooms.

Additional topics will include strategies for engaging young audiences, building public trust through inclusive leadership, and navigating the evolving advertising landscape.

Vincent Peyrègne, CEO of WAN-IFRA, emphasized the urgency for African publishers to fast-track their digital transformation efforts saying: “With rising newsprint and distribution costs, and the downsizing or closure of print publications, African publishers must speed up their digital transformation programs to create a sustainable foundation for digital revenue generation and to continue their vital role in society.”

Peyrègne added that the event would serve as a catalyst for goodwill and foster new opportunities for African publishers through international collaboration.

The conference will feature practical case studies and insights aimed at enhancing audience engagement and revenue growth, with a focus on the use of new technologies. The Digital Media Africa 2024 Conference will bring together 150 participants and speakers from across Africa and Europe. Nairobi was chosen as the host city due to its vibrant news media community.

The event will be preceded by workshops on September 17 and followed by visits to local media companies on September 20 for interested participants.

Registration fees for WAN-IFRA members range from €190 to €290, while non-members will pay between €280 and €400.
