The “Diamond Awards Media for Media Excellence Trust Fund” is set to present a book titled: “Watchdog or Captured Media? A Study of the Role of the Media in Nigeria’s Emergent Democracy 1999-2016,” on Tuesday May 22, 2018 at the Afe Babalola Hall of the University of Lagos, Akoka.
The “ground-breaking media work” which will go public by 11a.m. features contributions from at least 11 eminent media scholars and professionals. It is edited by Professor Ayo Olukotun of the Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair of Governance, Department of Political Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.
The chapter titled: “State Media Relations: Constraints on Freedom of Media,” was written by Christian Ogbondah, Professor of Journalism, University of Northern Iowa, USA; while Former Director of the School of Communication, University of Ghana, Legon and Founder of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Professor Kwame Karikari wrote the chapter: “Media as Watchdog: The Ghanaian Experience.”
Professor Lai Oso who is a Former Dean of the School of Communication, Lagos State University wrote the chapter: “Democracy and the Digital Public Sphere”; while the Chapter: “Democracy and the Broadcasting sector” was written by Dr. Oluyinka Esan, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Communications, University of Winchester, England.
“Media Reportage of Religious and Ethnic Conflicts: The Northern Experience,” was the chapter written by Dr. Nathaniel Danjibo, a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan and Head of Unit/Programme Coordinator for the Peace and Conflict Studies Unit of the Institute.
Also, Ford Foundation Programme Officer (Media) and Associate Professor, formerly of the Western Michigan University, Dr. Paul Nwulu wrote the section: “Media Reportage of Religious and Ethnic Conflicts: The Southern Experience.”
Salawu, Professor of Communication, Mafikeng campus North Western University, South-Africa, wrote on: “ Media as Watchdog: The South-African Experience”; while Dr. Peter Kimani who is a Lecturer at the Graduate School of Media and Communications, Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya, contributed: “Media as Watchdog: A Comparative Perspective from Kenya.”
Executive Director of Media Rights Agenda, Mr. Edetaen Ojo contributed the chapter: “The Road to the Freedom of Information Act and Beyond;” while Mr Lanre Idowu who is the Editor-In-Chief, Media Review and Supervising Trustee, Diamond Awards for Media Excellence wrote the Chapter: “Corruption in the Media: the Brown Envelope Syndrome.”
Professor Ayo Olukotun who is leading the project concludes the book with: “Media as Watchdog: Introduction and Overview, Economic and Technological Issues, Glancing Back, Looking forward.”
