World Nomads Accepting Applications for 2019 Travel Film Scholarship

The World Nomads is now accepting applications from aspiring travel photographers, filmmakers or writers interested in turning their passion into a profession.  Winners will receive mentoring from award-winning filmmaker, Jenny Nichols, in addition to other prizes.

Each year talented travellers are sent into the field to capture the world’s stories which include staggering seascapes and incredible biodiversity while learning from seasoned industry professionals.

Applicants would also be telling stories of the diverse local communities who call Malaysia home.

Winners of the Scholarship would receive money-can’t-buy learning experiences; mentorship from renowned travel storytellers; and global assignments for real clients.

Past winners have gone on to work in film production, create successful travel blogs, write for major publishers, and have had their scholarship work broadcast to thousands of people around the world.

Applicants could also win round-trip airfare from your closest international airport to Malaysia; professional mentorship; 10-day trip to explore Malaysia and capture its stories on an all-expenses-paid adventure; audio gear that can record superior sound for film with new microphones courtesy of RØDE Microphones; camera bag and accessories to protect gear with a specialised camera bag from Lowepro and accessories from Langly; and travel insurance for the trip provided by World Nomads.

To apply, applicants should make a 3-minute documentary by interviewing  an adventurer or inspiring traveler and bring their compelling travel story to life; upload their film to YouTube or Vimeo, ensuring that the video is publicly accessible; and then complete the application form by filling in their personal details so organisers know how to contact applicants should they make the shortlist.

Applicants should, through their applications be able to convince the judging panel that they have the spirit of adventure and a passion for travel filmmaking. A good travel documentary that stands a chance should:

  • Convey a strong narrative in English (or with English subtitles)
  • Focus on a specific travel story within a 3 minute timeframe
  • Show interviewing skills and ability to coax a good story from subject
  • Demonstrate strong filmmaking skills
  • Show originality
  • Be visually engaging

The scholarship recipient, along with the shortlist of the best films, will be published on the World Nomads website on September 10, 2019.

Films compiled solely of still shots will not be considered as applicants are expected to demonstrate their skill with the moving image. Only one application per person is allowed.
