The 2022 Africa and Middle East Regional Meeting of the Open Government Partnership will take place in Marrakech, Morocco’s fourth largest city, from November 1 to 3, 2022.

The meeting, which will be co-hosted by the OGP and the Kingdom of Morocco, will bring together open government champions and stakeholders from the region as well as key international partners.

The OGP is a multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. Nigeria joined the OGP as the 70th member in 2016.

According to the OGP Support Unit, the secretariat of the international partnership, the 2022 Africa and Middle East Regional Meeting is aimed at raising collective ambition, energizing the community, and generating new political support to make governments more transparent, accountable and responsive to citizens.

The meeting is being convened against the background of many societies and institutions in Africa and the Middle East grappling with the devastating socio-economic consequences brought about by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

It is motivated by the need to step up efforts and reforms to advance sustainable development and economic recovery.

According to the OGP Support Unit, “In the spirit of accelerating sustainable development and economic recovery in Africa, this year’s meeting will focus on leveraging open government approaches to strengthen public service delivery in the region. Participants will share experiences, best practices and lessons on advancing critical public service policy areas including anti-corruption, digital innovation, access to justice, and civic participation.”
