BON Executive Secretary
The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), a broad coalition of over 100 public and private broadcasters that collectively own over 250 radio and television stations in Nigeria has called on both federal and state governments to address the myriad of challenges confronting the broadcasting industry as a result of the poor economy which caused untold hardship for broadcast media managers in Nigeria in 2022.
Making the statement while reviewing activities of the broadcast industry BON Executive Secretary, Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, listed the issues which caused hardship to the sector as National Electricity Grid collapses that magnified the epileptic public power supply problem; rising bills for non-available power supply; unbearable running costs orchestrated by skyrocketing cost of diesel; perennial scarcity of premium motor spirit; an unprecedented devaluation of the Naira; poor funding of public owned stations; over saturated private radio and television stations; dwindling advertising revenue; and imposition of multiple taxation.
Dr. Bamgbose called on both Federal and State Governments to put proper funding mechanisms in place to alleviate the many challenges confronting their stations, while policies that are capable of stimulating the economy that will enhance advertising of products and services through the broadcast media should be put in place.
He added that the Federal Government should deploy necessary funds to the National Broadcasting Commission to enable it implement digitisation programmes that will be beneficial to stakeholders in particular and the public at large.
He also urged media practitioners and managers, most especially the Broadcast Media, to continue to perform their constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour in order to have a just and democratic society where the media continue to play their constitutional role with ease.
