Free Press Unlimited, an Amsterdam-based international non-governmental organization, is now accepting nominations for two awards for the 2024 edition of the Free Press Awards, which recognise exceptional journalists and media professionals who have shown a strong commitment to press freedom and independent information.
The Awards which are in two categories: the Most Resilient Journalist, and Newcomer of the Year, will honour journalists who risk everything to bring news; media pioneers who pave the way for equality and justice, and those who persevere under the most difficult circumstances.
The Most Resilient Journalist Award would be presented to a journalist who has demonstrated extraordinary strength of character, courage and perseverance in reporting the news and has often faced imprisonment, violence and censorship for doing his/her job. Such journalist must have shown a strong commitment to press freedom and independent information, and is a generally highly-regarded journalist who is willing to risk his/her life or freedom in order to keep the public informed.
The Newcomer of the Year in Journalism Award is presented to talented new journalists who have put in a strong performance when it comes to reporting the news and must have demonstrated exceptional commitment to press freedom and independent coverage, and use innovative methods to disseminate this information.
Nominations for the awards will be judged by an independent panel of international experts. The winner of the ‘Most Resilient Journalist’ Award will receive a cash prize while the winner of the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ Award will receive a media scholarship of choice.
Applicants should please note the following when nominating:
• Applicants cannot nominate themselves;
• Nominators should make sure their nominees are aware and give permission;
• A minimum of three works of nominees should be uploaded with the nomination;
• Only journalists who have practiced for a maximum of three years are eligible for the Newcomer of the Year award.
