Journalist Attacked While Investigating Extortion in Rivers State

On April 14, 2026, a reporter with Beat99.9 FM radio in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, a commercial English-medium entertainment, music and information station owned by  Megalectrics Limited, Mr Allwell Eneh, was assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals at the Garrison Bus Stop area in Port Harcourt while carrying out his professional duties.

Mr Eneh was reportedly attacked while responding to reports of ongoing extortion activities in the area. The assailants allegedly descended on him without provocation, and disrupting his work.

The incident has drawn attention to growing insecurity around the Garrison axis, where residents have complained of harassment and extortion by suspected groups operating in the area.

Colleagues of the journalist say the attack highlights the risks media professionals face while reporting on issues affecting the public, particularly in volatile environments.

There have been calls for the Rivers State Police Command to investigate the incident and identify those responsible, amid concerns over increasing cases of violence and intimidation.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
