The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Meta Platforms Inc., have introduced a new initiative called the Meta-Supported Initiative for Data Protection (M-SIDP) designed to improve how personal data is protected in Nigeria, and strengthen safeguards for individuals whose data is collected and used.
In a statement signed by Mr Itunu Dosekun, NDPC’s Head of Media Unit, the Commission noted that the initiative is part of a regulatory agreement involving it and Meta Platforms, Inc., following an investigation into Meta’s data processing practices in Nigeria, which was resolved in 2025 through a court-approved settlement.
As part of the agreement, Meta will support a two-year programme focused on public data protection efforts. These efforts align with Nigeria’s Data Protection Act 2023, related implementation guidelines, and the Commission’s 2023–2027 strategic plan.
The M-SIDP programme will focus on four key areas, which include improving governance, research, and development; strengthening safety and sustainability in digital systems and technology; training Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and compliance organisations (DPCOs); and raising public awareness, especially among vulnerable groups.
The Commission says the settlement does not limit its legal powers. It will continue to regulate data processing activities in Nigeria under existing laws.
NDPC also says it will provide regular updates on the programme and is calling on stakeholders to support efforts to build a safer and more accountable data protection system in the country.
