Nigeria has assumed chairship of the Programme and External Relations Commission (PX Commission) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a key standing commission of UNESCO’s Executive Board that advises on the implementation of the organization’s programmes, international partnerships, and strategic reforms.

Nigeria formally assumed its responsibilities as Chair of the Commission on April 15, 2026, during the 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, when the country’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, Dr. Hajo Sani, presided over its session on behalf of Nigeria for the first time in the country’s capacity as Chair.

Nigeria’s leadership of the PX Commission follows its election to the position during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan’s third-largest city, in 2025.

The Commission is responsible for examining programme implementation matters, partnerships, and cross-cutting priorities that support the effective delivery of UNESCO’s mandate across education, the sciences, culture, and communication and information. It also handles other crucial matters such as gender equality, Global Priority Africa, and crisis response, ensuring Member State decisions lead to action.

Through its work, the Commission helps ensure that decisions adopted by Member States are translated into coordinated action and measurable results on the ground.
